Silverton
A Dog's Way HomeSilverton is a town on Bella’s journey home, marked by a sheriff’s station, streets with scattered food, and a pack of dogs gathered behind a store. The town becomes a brief test of her growing judgment: friendly people and a welcoming canine group offer possible refuge, but Bella has learned that safety and kindness do not necessarily lead back to Lucas.
Setting and Arrival
Warren proposes taking Bella to the Silverton sheriff’s station so its staff can advise them what to do. The plan places her in a town with automobiles, people, and buildings, distinct from the earlier place where Jose and Loretta had taken her. The narrative identifies Silverton through the proposed destination and the town sequence that follows, rather than through a broad description of its landscape or history.
After Warren and Dude enter a large building, Bella watches from their car. Its glass doors remind her of the place with crates of barking dogs, and the resemblance brings her fear of being taken away into focus. She understands that people may be pleasant, feed her, or offer a ride without helping her return to Lucas. Rather than wait to discover what the building holds, she wriggles out through the car window and falls onto the pavement, loose and off leash.
Streets, Food, and the Dog Pack
Once free, Bella follows food scents through town. People call to her from cars and open doorways, but she does not approach them because she doubts that they will take her to Lucas. Hunger competes with her determination to go home: she eats a sweet, sticky scrap and dry bread from the sidewalk, then keeps tracking aromas in hopes of finding another meal.
The smell of several dogs moving together draws her away from other barking dogs, including one she sees chained. Behind a store, she finds a pack: two dark-coated males, one large and one small, and a short, long-haired female. The males approach and inspect her; Bella remains physically guarded, though her wagging tail signals a friendly greeting. The female stays by the store’s back door, where the food smell is strongest. The encounter offers Bella a chance to join other dogs around a source of food, but the scene presents her first as a cautious newcomer assessing the group.
A Temporary Crossroads
Silverton’s role in Bella’s journey is shaped by the difference between welcome and belonging. The town contains people who seem friendly, food left within reach, and dogs moving as a group. Yet Bella’s experience in the car has taught her that a kind gesture or a comfortable ride can still take her farther from Lucas. She does not mistake the pack’s presence for the home she seeks; the town is a temporary crossroads where her need to eat and her resolve to continue homeward meet.
